BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Background:  The Poarch Band of Creek Indians Tribal Historic Preservation Department strives to preserve and protect their history. Their history is an essential part of who they are and much of it exists as non-renewable resources consisting of archaeological sites.

From Monday, January 29, 2024, through Wednesday, January 31, 2024, the Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (THPOs) worked at the Live Oak Landing site to do the preservation work.

The IBA438 (Live Oak Landing Site) is a large site with a variety of prehistoric cultural activities. It is essential to continue protecting it as best as we are able. To aid in this continued protection, the Poarch Band of Creek Indians Tribal Historic Preservation Department recommends terminating the back section of the gravel roadway near the site and removing the Disc Golf from the area. Removing the road will limit vehicle traffic near the site and potential vandalism. Likewise moving the Disc Golf goals will help to minimize traffic and potential harm to the site.

Previous Commission action/date:  November 7, 2023, Regular Meeting - The BCC (1) authorized the THPOs to advise and assist the Archives and History staff in the preservation efforts of a tribal historic property at Live Oak Landing; and (2) Approved the THPOs to conduct the work necessary at the Live Oak Landing Site, to preserve the tribal historic property; and (3) Authorized the Archives and History Department to work with the THPOs to ensure that the historic property to be properly preserved to protect the cultural heritage of the property.
