Adopt a Proclamation which proclaims the month of March 2024 as “Women’s History Month” in Baldwin County, Alabama.
End
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Background: The Archives and History staff will accept the proclamation and give a brief presentation.
In the United States, Women’s History Month traces its beginnings back to the first International Women’s Day in 1911. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8th as National Women’s History Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the next year, passing a resolution establishing a national celebration. Six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March.
Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture, and society and has been observed annually in March in the United States since 1987.
The theme for Women’s History Month 2024 is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.”
