Recommendation
Take the following actions:
1) Approve the removal of a derelict boat in Palmetto Creek; and
2) Authorize the Purchasing Director to issue a Purchase Order to Gillis Construction, Inc. for the removal of the derelict boat at a cost of $5,300.00 per Quote.End
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Background: The Palmetto Creek community has requested Commission assistance to remove the remnants of a derelict vessel located on a shallow point at the mouth of Palmetto Creek in Perdido Bay. The vessel remnants are lodged at or just below the waterline a short distance from the navigation channel, creating a serious public safety hazard for boaters and jet ski traffic. Staff conversations with ALEA and other agencies have revealed that since the remnants are not actually in the navigation channel, there are no plans for those agencies to remove the remnants. Given the relatively close proximity of two County boat ramps and overall high boat traffic in the area, it is in the best interest of the public’s safety for these items to be removed.
Three (3) quotes were received. The lowest quote was from Gillis Construction, Inc., in the amount of $5,300.00. Quotes attached for review.
Funding for this derelict boat removal will be from the FY 2023 receipt of the Forever Wild Land Trust Payment.
