BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Title

Recommendation

Previous Commission action/date:  N/A

Background:  Through this project, we will test the hypothesis that the proposed engineered biochar-based recycled concrete breakwater can achieve both mechanical and environmental performance equivalent to that of conventional concrete while maintaining a zero-carbon footprint.

This project has three objectives:

(1) To develop engineered biochar-based concrete incorporating recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and evaluate its basic mechanical properties and durability in comparison to conventional concrete.

(2) To investigate the structural integrity and environmental impacts of breakwaters constructed from engineered biochar-based recycled concrete.

(3) To calculate the carbon footprint of engineered biochar-based recycled concrete and ensure its carbon neutrality.

In April 2025, the Environmental Advisory Committee approved the submission of the Letter of Support to the Baldwin County Commission for its consideration.
