BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Background: Staff received notification from ASDAR respectfully requesting the Baldwin County Commission to approve the placement of a Revolutionary Patriots monument at Baldwin County Bicentennial Park in Stockton. The Revolutionary Patriots monument is being proposed by the ASDAR as part of the nationwide America 250 Celebration, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
The proposed monument will recognize the service and sacrifice of those who fought in the American Revolutionary War, contribute to the historical interpretation of military service, and will become part of the existing Veterans Memorial area at Bicentennial Park.
The Baldwin County Commission adopted a Master Plan to include enhancements to the current Veterans Memorial Park. The master plan shows formal paths and nodes intended for interpretive features and monuments. It is the recommendation of the Director of Archives and History to place the monument at the beginning of the memorial timeline because it represents the birth of the United States which also ties beautifully to the America 250 initiative.
The Revolutionary Patriots monument will be placed immediately to the right of the Bernardo de Galvez monument which is the first thing visitors see when approaching the memorial. Due to both monuments being directly tied to the American Revolutionary War, they should be visually connected.
All costs associated with the monument, including design, fabrication, installation, and the dedication ceremony, will be fully funded by ASDAR.
