BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Background: The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit is comprised of dual purpose Belgian Malinois which perform both drug detection and patrol / apprehension functions. There are currently four teams assigned to the recently formed Street Crimes Unit, which saturates problematic areas in communities and apprehends high-risk / violent felons. The K9 Unit also features four single purpose dogs / teams which include two German Shorthaired Pointers, one Bloodhound, and one Lab. These teams specialize in non-criminal tracking, jail sweeps, and intercepting drugs. In February 2025, our K9 Unit competed at the Dothan Police Department’s Annual K9 Seminar and received 1st and 2nd place awards in both detection and patrol discipline. Since 2023 our K9 teams have deployed a total of 467 times - 357 times for drug detection and 110 times for patrol / apprehension incidents. Of the 357 drug detection deployments, 119 seizures of illegal contraband occurred including $1,205,079.00 in illicit bulk currency. Of the 110 patrol deployments, 101 resulted in the capture and surrender of a wanted felon, with only one resulting in a suspect being bitten.
