BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Background: The School Resource Officer (SRO) Program has been active in Baldwin County public schools since its inception in 2017. Baldwin County Commission (BCC), Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), and Baldwin County Board of Education (BCBE) have agreed to work together to continue the SRO Program at the public schools within Baldwin County. Agreements with municipalities are forthcoming from BCSO for consideration at a future Commission meeting. The municipalities and BCSO will provide personnel, BCSO and BCC will provide administrative assistance and BCBE will provide funding for the SRO Program.

BCSO will reimburse BCC to the deputy salary reimbursement account.

The SRO Program involves the assignment of a deputy sheriff to a public school as a SRO. The SROs perform three different roles while operating inside the public schools: the duties of an APOST certified law enforcement officer, an informal counselor, and an instructor of law related and safety classes.

Previous Commission action/date:  08/15/2023 - Previous MOUs for SRO Program approved by the Commission.
