STAFF RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation

Take the following actions:

1) Approve the cycling routes for the Alabama-Louisiana-Mississippi Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Annual Bike MS: Tour de Beach Fundraising event in Gulf Shores, Alabama, on September 28 and 29, 2024. The routes will originate from Lake Shelby across from The Lodge at Gulf State Park; and

2)  Approve the use of Mullet Point Park as a rest stop from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2024, utilizing the pavilion with two portable toilets and a handwashing station to be provided by event coordinator.

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office will provide security and traffic control for the event.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

 

Background:  County Commission staff received a request from the Alabama-Louisiana-Mississippi Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society regarding the Bike MS: Tour de Beach Fundraising event on September 28 and 29, 2024.

 

This year there will be approximately 150 participants cycling 150 miles (18, 25, 45, 55, or 75 miles each day) to benefit people living with Multiple Sclerosis.

 

The Commission is being asked to approve the cycling routes, the use of county roads, and the use Mullet Point Park on Saturday, September 28, 2024, as a rest stop from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This rest stop will utilize the already existing pavilion, and the event coordinator will provide two portable toilets and a hand washing station on the premises.

 

Previous Commission action/date:  August 15, 2023 - Approved the National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Alabama-Mississippi Chapter’s Annual Bike MS: Tour de Beach
