STAFF RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation

For the purposes which benefit citizens with voting during elections, approve the Highway Department to perform the work to re-stripe one existing handicap parking space, stripe one new van accessible parking space, and install a designated van accessible parking sign at the Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department, a designated polling place in Baldwin County Voting Precinct No. 4, at a cost for labor and materials not to exceed $532.75.

The Baldwin County Commission determines this appropriation serves a public purpose by bringing the Crossroads VFD in compliance with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to ensure that people with disabilities have full and equal opportunity to vote.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Background:  The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires each polling place to provide one (1) accessible parking space per 25 parking spaces (up to the first 100 spaces), and at least one (1) van accessible parking space, with proper signage marking each accessible parking space.

Crossroads VFD was designated by the Commission as a polling place on November 21, 2023.  Volunteer fire departments are non-profit, quasi-governmental entities which provide a governmental service to the public.
