STAFF RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation

Approve the recommendation to place the Baldwin County Tapestry Throw in the ACCA County Government Time Capsule.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The theme of the upcoming ACCA 90th Convention and Celebration will highlight “where county government has been, where we are and where we’re going.”  In honor of where county government is today, ACCA will be filling a 90th-year county government time capsule (to be opened in 2028 at the ACCA 100th Annual Convention) at this year’s convention.  Each county is asked to select one capsule-worthy item and select a representative to place that item in the time capsule at the Convention.

Staff has chosen the Baldwin County Tapestry Throw since Baldwin County has been the theatre of some of the most striking events in Alabama History.  These events are reflected on the throw along with the Baldwin County Seal, which reflects the county’s strong veneration for history and geography.  Also depicted are nations with past or present jurisdiction over the county: Spain (1519-1670), France (1670-1763), England (1763 -1780), Spain (1783-1813), Alabama (1817-1819), the Confederacy (1861-1865) and The United States of America (1865 - Present).

The throw has thirty-four (34) historic sites with dates and photographs and signifies the ever-present willingness of the people of Baldwin County to protect and preserve its rich history.
