Background: The Alabama 200 Baldwin County Bicentennial Celebration is a chance to celebrate our place in each of the 67 counties. It is a moment to remember the people who made our state and to nurture the generations who will carry us forward. It is an opportunity to chart a prosperous future for the state with history as our guide.
Baldwin County’s projects were planned to invest in our schools and engage communities, and encourage citizens and visitors alike to explore and learn about the state to include but not limited to:
• Alabama 200 Baldwin County Art and T-shirt design contest
• Baldwin Historic Tours
• Historic Marker Dedications
• Bicentennial Pre-Easter festival
• Reenactment on the “Removal of the Baldwin County Seat”
• Regional workshop
• Alabama Day-History Fair at Daphne High School
• Making Alabama: “A Bicentennial Traveling Exhibit”
• “200 Baldwin County Legends” puzzles and a coffee table book
• Baldwin Heritage Families Program
• Book Publication - “200 things you need to know about the Alabama 200 celebration in Baldwin County”
• Three historical paintings producing original, accurate artwork depicting three of the nationally significant military battles in Baldwin County
• Education component that involved working with our schools to each local history in the classrooms and to tie field trips and projects to Baldwin County History in celebration of the Alabama 200. A curriculum was created that is now being used in fourth and tenth grade classrooms on local history. All of Baldwin County’s projects was planned to last beyond the Bicentennial Celebration. Our projects are educational investments that will repay decades forward.
The committee reached out to other municipalities and organizations throughout the county and encouraged them to join the celebration. Baldwin County is represented by having twelve of its fifteen municipalities participating in the celebration.
