Creation of a 2019-2020 Internship Program for the Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency

Body

STAFF RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation

Approve the creation of a 2019-2020 Internship Program for the Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Department.

End

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Previous Commission action/date:  N/A

Background:  Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Department is looking to integrate an unpaid internship program that would consist of 3 to 4 college students, or recent graduates, seeking experience of working in the Emergency Management field.  The students must be in the second year of a related field and the course of study, or degree, must be in a parallel field, if not in Emergency Management. Our goal is to start the internship program with the Fall semester of 2019 and continue for a minimum of four semesters.

Each candidate would assist current EMA staff members in a vast array of opportunities such as: assist with the ongoing development and maintenance of written communications and placement in the targeted outlets; assist in coordinating interviews and briefings with the local media and press; assist in planning, preparing and conducting public outreach events and publications; assist with social media and other platforms to increase awareness and preparedness to our local citizens of Baldwin County, as well as the visitors of our county year round.  This opportunity for the students to experience all aspects of our day to day operations at the Emergency Operations Center would be of great benefit for the interns and their education, as well as be a great asset to our EMA Department staff.
