Recommendation

Thank the following committee members for their civic service as members of the committee: Ms. Ashley Jones-Davis, Mr. Bert Blackmon, Ms. Claudia Slaughter-Campbell, Ms. Coletta Bailey, Dr. Phyllis French, Ms. Harriet Outlaw, Mr. Herman Arrington, Mr. John Biggs, Honorable Judge Charles Partin, Ms. Kelly Stewart, Mr. Mike Bunn, and Ms. Felisha Anderson.

 

The committee members will attend the January 21, 2020 Commission meeting.  Carolyn Feltus, Alabama Bicentennial Ambassador for the Gulf Coast area will attend the meeting as well. 

 

Ms. Feltus would like to address the Commission regarding the Bicentennial.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

 

Previous Commission action/date:  January 14, 2020, BCC Work Session ; January 17, 2017, BCC Regular Meeting

 

The Baldwin County Commission, during its regularly scheduled meeting held on January 17, 2017, appointed Ms. Ashley Jones-Davis, Mr. Bert Blackmon, Ms. Claudia Slaughter-Campbell, Mr. Mike Bunn, Ms. Harriet Outlaw, Ms. Coletta Bailey, Dr. Phyllis French, Mr. Herman Arrington, Mr. John Biggs, the Honorable Judge Charles Partin, Ms. Kelly Stewart, Ms. Jo Ann Flirt and Ms. Shannon Spivey to serve on the Alabama 200 Bicentennial Steering Committee.  The Committee became effective on January 17, 2017, and ended on December 31, 2019; and Adopted Resolution #2017-040, endorsing and supporting the efforts of the Alabama Bicentennial Commission in Baldwin County, Alabama.

 

Background:  The temporary committee was created by the Baldwin County Commission on January 17, 2017, with an effective date of January 17, 2017 and termination date of December 31, 2019.  Thirteen (13) members, selected by the Archives Director, were appointed to the committee by the Commission on January 17, 2017.  The committee ended with only eleven (11) members, serving.  Ms. Jo Ann Flirt, former Director of Blakeley State Park, passed away February 2, 2018, and Ms. Shannon Spivey resigned from the committee due to work responsibilities.  Ms. Shannon Spivey and her staff continued to assist the committee on as many Bicentennial projects as possible over the past three years.

 

The committee was appointed to support, create, and execute events and activities in Baldwin County that commemorate Alabama’s 200th Anniversary of Statehood.
