STAFF RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation

Discussion Item only at this time - The Honorable Ralph Hellmich, Mayor of the City of Foley, will be in attendance to discuss the use of a portion of County leased property as a location for a proposed first responder safe room and parking area.  The property is located between N. Poplar Street and Juniper Street in Foley, Alabama, and is currently used for the Regional Area Transit System (BRATS) Hub.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Previous Commission action/date:  N/A

Background:

The City of Foley is proposing terminating the long-term lease between the City and the County and deeding a portion of the property to the County for use as a parking area for BRATS and first responders.

The proposed safe room would accommodate up to 200 first responders.  The City anticipates many of the first responders would park at City Hall, the fire houses, or the Judicial Center and ride together to the safe room.

See attached two parking layouts.  The first is a layout with 160 parking spaces.  The second has 130 spaces.  The City recommends a gate be installed between the two parking lots to allow overflow to either side should a need arise.
