STAFF RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation

Adopt a Proclamation proclaiming the month of April 2024 as “Fair Housing Month” in Baldwin County, Alabama.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Background:  President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act into law on April 11, 1968. The Act states “It is the policy of the United States to provide, within constitutional limitations, for fair housing throughout the United States.”  The 1968 Fair Housing Act prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, and national origin. In 1974, the Fair Housing Act was amended to prohibit discrimination based on sex.

The National Association of REALTORS® (or NAR) is America’s largest trade association, representing 1.6 million members. The term REALTOR® is a registered collective membership mark that identifies a real estate professional who is a member of NAR and subscribes to its strict Code of Ethics, which includes Article 10 on upholding the Fair Housing Act. As the local chapter to NAR, Baldwin REALTORS® raises up ethical experts committed to Fair Housing.

Every April, REALTORS® commemorate the passage of the Fair Housing Act and reflect on housing discrimination and segregation, past and present. As community leaders, real estate professionals have an opportunity to be a part of equitable and inclusive change.

Ms. Evelyn Hall, Diversity Chair, with Baldwin REALTORS® will be present to accept the Proclamation.
